Reason for entering: He wants to resurrect the lighthouse keeper that came before
him, reasoning that they will know how to stop the ever worsening storms.

Memento: An unnamed tome older than the rock the lighthouse lays

upon.

Strengths: Mental resilience with a strong inclination to survive, and perceptive.

Book intelligence centering around nautical and marine subjects and good
with the history relating to it.

Abilities:

While Hugh is human, his studies of the tome endow him with abilities

unknown to man. While he is not aware of the connection, these often

come at a price to himself.

⬆ Hugh can see the future in flashes. They often appear at random, for only a
few seconds long, and there is no predicting when it will come. He will
typically see something relating to a person or object he interacts with for
the first time. This is dependent on physical touch. The things he sees are
shrouded in fog and horrors, and are bound to happen but the context
around them is never known. Still, fate has a way of happening and he
cannot change the vision, only prepare for it.

Note: When Hugh experiences a vision, it is often impossible to
describe what he saw as he comprehends it in a way not describable
by human language. This however does not mean that others who
possess mind-viewing abilities aren't able to see it, understand it,
and describe it if they have a language that contains the
vocabulary for it.

⬆ Hugh hears whispers when holding the tome, which he now almost always
holds. They come from parallel realities and can sometimes guide him
through his struggles.

⬆ Hugh may call upon a power beyond him that is tied to the tome in order to
command water. These are in bursts, and only accessible when or where
significant blood has been shed. However, he does not yet know that this is
possible.

Water control is restricted bodies of water, and are not sustainable
for long periods of time. They are often “burst” actions that are
violent and decisive in nature. They cannot be called upon often
and are “last resorts” that are fueled by rage or desperation.
It doesn't matter who’s blood is shed to access the ability, only that
it makes contact with the tome. The holder of the tome may then
access the ability, but the strength is proportional to the amount of
bloodshed. Sacrifice other than blood may be used, but the
materials of these sacrifices have yet to become known. Each of these
trades increases the hold of the tome onto that person.

⬆ When Hugh smokes tobacco, he gains momentary clarity, calm, or lucidity.

Hugh is a long time smoker, and while he has been trying to quit,
he has brought on his person a pack and a half of cigarettes.
Rationing at a cigarette a day, he will last less than a month on his
stash. The cigarettes may provide him with momentary lucidity
immediately at the time of smoking, and for that he may carry,
put out, and reuse the same cigarette throughout the day. He can
use the same cigarette no more than 4 times in a day, and when he
is stressed, he may smoke much more.

Weaknesses:

⬇ Regardless of his conservative smoking habits, the long term damage to his
lungs has caused him much harm. Physical weaknesses are as follows:

Hugh runs out of breath easily, as his lungs are heavily scarred and
damaged from decades of smoking tobacco.
Hugh’s cardio ability is severely lacking, with even the shortest
sprint leaving him intensely winded and struggling to catch his
breath. Due to this he’ll take every opportunity to cut the amount
of running he has to do.
Hugh experiences breathing difficulties and his strong cough
makes stealth almost impossible.
While he may have earned his sea legs, Hugh is not a well balanced
person. Years living surrounded by water and growing to be
unusually tall, his sense of balance is terrible.

⬇ Hugh is also very rash. This is informed by his personal sense of justice and
the effects of the tome he experiences. This comes in multiple flavors.

When Hugh experiences a vision, he may be disoriented
immediately coming out of it. These visions are often shrouded in
incomprehensible shapes and visuals that may make him sick, and
can be hard to determine what they actually mean. Because of this,
he loses his sanity slowly over time. Sanity loss can result in but is
not limited to:
1. Worsening perceptive abilities.
2. Paranoia.
3. Flawed logic and worse problem solving.
4. Visual impairment and distortion.
5. Distorted understanding of reality.
6. Difficulty to recall or recognize

When Hugh listens to the whispers, they do not always help him.
As there may be several voices that try to speak to him at once,
sometimes they might guide and sometimes they may sabotage him.
While the right solution may often be within the crowd, there is
only one among the many that is trying to help. As he cannot tell
the difference, Hugh may listen to the wrong voice to his detriment.

Personality: Somber and morose, Hugh is a serious and hardly social individual.
Socially, he relies strongly on dry and deadpan humor, and can be blunt about his
thoughts. On occasion he goes on nonsensical tirades that only he seems to
understand. Something something, the eye of the storm is more than just an eye.
He thrives in books and self-study, and has developed a grandiose savior complex. He
believes firmly in his moral compass, and that fate is in his hands. He is a dark
individual who believes he is good, and will not accept his flaws.

History: Hugh’s family struggled to get by, and after the tragic suicide of the
previous job holder, he took up work as a lighthouse keeper to make ends meet for his
mother and two sisters back home. Here he discovered a library once belonging to the
previous keeper, along with an unnamed book to study. As he watched the storms
grow worse, his belief in the book and the fate of the previous keeper morphed from a
tragic suicide to a tale of a man preparing to fight off the gods, only to be smited.

Likes: The stars, the sea, boat riding, reading, and literary classics. Fishing, and
playing cello.

Dislikes: Heavy weather, the cold, morally grey/complex issues, and debate.

Other:

Hugh answers to both Hugh and Stan, as he’s referred to by both.
Hugh’s mental strength and tobacco use is a big part of the reason why he has
yet to succumb to the madness.
He has read many books in his time working at the lighthouse. The
lighthouse library is plentiful and varied and he may reference one at
random.

Design and Portrayal Notes:

Hugh's colors are not solid, you may use and change them as you see fit,
so long as the color dynamics are sorta the same. (Dark uniform, light undershirt, etc.)

A part of the fun with the theming of Hugh's character is he does not understand the
force he is reckoning with, or the power and reach of it. For that I encourage freedom
to express that however you want! You think something looks cool even if it's not
specifically stated? Rule of cool, as long as it's all for flavor and not rule breaking,
please do it!

The tome Hugh carries is also highly up for interpretation. As a part of the
otherworldly themes, you're free to illustrate it however you or your character might
interpret the "horror beyond human comprehension."
