Victoria “Tori” Lynn
Species : Human
Age : 28
Height/Weight : 5’5” (165 cm) | 213 lbs (96.6 kg)
Gender : Female
Reason for Entering : Magical Research
Memento : Faux’s pendant
Strengths :
Tome of Spells | A dense and heavy tome filled to the brim with various magical spells and more advanced magicks that Tori carries in her messenger bag. These are largely spells that she has not committed to memory, due to infrequent use or complexity, and can only be used when accessing her book. It also has information on various magical ingredients and some curses. It's pages are filled with notes in it's margins and it has various sticky nots and loose papers that have been added with Tori's personal notes. (See weaknesses: Bookworm)
Abilities :
Basic Blast | A roughly soft-ball sized blast of magical energy. It glows white at its center, fading out to purple around the edges. Once materialized it can be thrown from Tori’s staff in any direction . After traveling 60ft from its creation it will fizzle out. They will never penetrate skin, unlike a bullet. If a direct hit lands under 30ft away it can leave a circular 2nd degree burn (meaning it will blister).
> These are easy to cast and can be made in rapid fire. The quicker they’re made the less damage they do.
> Maximum of 3 active at once.
Helping Hand | A spectral hand that can help with simple tasks. It appears as a normal hand and wrist with a flat “cut off” shortly above the wrist, it’s slightly transparent and has a faint purple glow. It cannot hold more than 50 lbs, and cannot appear more than 20 ft from Tori’s position. Using this is like second nature to Tori because she uses this a lot at work.
Shedding Light | The stone in Tori’s staff glows faintly with magic. If she chooses to, she could brighten it to clearly illuminate a 20ft radius from her location.
Weaknesses :
Bookworm | Spells within the Tome cannot be accessed unless memorized or being read. Even though it contains some more powerful magicks and wards, if Tori loses her book she won’t be able to use them. Additionally, a majority of the spells in this require more time and focus than her basic magic. Spells within the tome would not be useful in combat situations since they are almost exclusively ritual type spells that require components, sigils, and long casting times.
My glasses! I can’t see without my glasses! | Exactly what’s on the tin. Tori’s glasses are a heavy prescription and without them she can’t make out much more than general colorful blobs of motion.
Personality :
Friendly, cheerful, and outgoing. She typically has a “professional face” when interacting with new people. She tends to be a little goofy and anxious at times, though she does a good job hiding it. When pushed, she does have a temper and will snap at people. The person who experiences this the most is Faux, who finds it fun to push Tori’s buttons. Intelligent and inquisitive, Tori’s main goal in life is preservation of magical knowledge and is often jotting notes in her personal journal.
Raised by a single father in a small city, Tori always had an interest in magic. When she began to exhibit her own abilities, her father encouraged her to seek apprenticeship at a nearby town. Things were going well, until a strange string of deaths and rumors of her home city being cursed drew her back.
Because all the rumors of the curse were related to nightmares, Tori’s investigation began there. After several smaller attempts of pulling a figment to the real world to question, she decided to recuperate her energy by taking time off. Her own nightmares began to worsen, nagging about how she was a failure and pushing her to continue her research. A voice promising that if she could manifest the right person to the real world they would be powerful enough to banish the evil haunting the town. In a final push of Tori’s abilities at the time, combined with Faux’s magical reserves, Faux was able to manifest in the real world. And true to her word, the nightmares stopped.
When she felt that her home was safe, Tori returned to her apprenticeship. Faux accompanied her, claiming to be indebted. Near the end of her apprenticeship Tori heard rumors of a legendary and long forgotten library that used to be a beacon of magical information being found, and even opening its doors again. While that turned out to be more than she bargained for, including a fight for her survival. During this, it came out that Faux had actually been the entity driving people to their deaths all along. Despite the righteous anger Tori was filled with, they managed to pull past it to escape the death trap of a library. Over time, Faux was able to prove that she was apologetic about it, and would do anything for Tori.
Eventually Tori finished her apprenticeship and was hired at the most prestigious magic and science university as a sort of librarian and archivist. The only hang up was that once the University learned about figments, they required this powerful species to be bound to their human world hosts in order to limit their almost godly powers. Faux accepted this without question, and has been living with Tori peacefully within the walls of The University ever since.
Likes : Books (the stranger the better, both fiction and non-fiction), works on magic, its history and proper application, clear sunny days at the beach, making friends , Faux (despite everything), and curling up before bed with a good book to read
Casting Shadows | If she wants to she can recede into a shadow. It won’t be visibly noticeable whether she’s in a shadow or not (she will be denoted in any visual media as a set of eyes for reader ease).
Beastly | She has one other form, which makes her what Tori would describe as ‘a camel goat ram lion thing’ that stands at 5’ (152.4cm) tall at the shoulders. It is actually this form, her true form, that gives her her unusually high weight as a human. In this form she’s a little bit stronger, but only enough to allow her to carry around passengers on her back. She can carry about 300lbs (136kg) comfortably, anything more would be a strain. She is rarely in this form unless she’s trying to scare someone, or she is too tired to maintain a human form. She still has opposable thumbs in this form and can hold items in her ‘front paws’.
Shadow Realm | She can hide in the shadows to rest (see abilities: Casting Shadows ) and can travel between shadows that are touching. However if there is a single shadow that is not connected to any other shadow and she is ‘stuck’ there she will essentially die if it vanishes. When the shadow comes back she’ll be there once more but will have no recollection of what happened while the shadow was gone and will be disoriented for some time afterwards.
More Human than She Looks | Despite not aging, she can come to harm just as easily as any other living being when manifested in the real realm.
Personality :
Monotone, insulting, and has a superiority complex. Tori is about the only person Faux seems to actually respect. If she can make fun of you, she probably will and will do it in the most cutting way possible. The exception to her insults are children, which she seems to have a soft spot for insofar as she won’t be directly mean unless provoked. She likes to “experiment” by mentally tormenting people and seeing how long it will take them to break. Lots of her meanness is under the guise of “for science”. That said, she is the less talkative of the pair and she will almost never act out in front of Tori. She likes to stand back and observe and can often put others at unease under her cool, seemingly emotionless, gaze.
> She will sometimes say or present things that sound like they are breaking the fourth wall. She’s not actually all-knowing. But she does know that realms exist beyond the human one and likes to be weird about it.
> In a similar fashion she will sometimes say things she has guessed as if they are fact. They are not always accurate, but are sufficiently freaky when true.
History : Purple in this segment indicates shared history, meaning it will be the same in Tori's
Faux once existed in the dreamscape. A parallel dimension that interacts with humans (and animals) via dreams. At one point she was an average figment, providing dreams to all in even measure. Until something happened. Stricken with grief she decided to hoard her magic by no longer providing the most energy intensive dreams. Good dreams. Instead she turned fully to nightmares, building as much magical energy as she could to try to escape the dreamscape. She became so warped by providing only nightmares that she began to enjoy it, pushing the limits further and further. “Testing” the humans she encountered until they just couldn’t take it anymore. It wasn’t her fault, humans are just so weak. The human psyche is just so fun to toy with, deprive of sleep, brew self-hatred.
She wound up localizing in a single town. The population began noticeably dipping. It was where Tori was from. The at-the-time apprentice magician returned home to try to figure out what was happening. After several smaller attempts of pulling a figment to the real world to question, she decided to recuperate her energy by taking time off. Physical strength | While she can throw a punch, she certainly doesn’t have any outstanding power behind it. She would be easy to physically overthrow in terms of grappling or fighting.
Round is a Shape | Tori works as a librarian. Her life is largely sedimentary, or non strenuous. She's got extra meat on her bones and she's not fast. Extended physical activities get her out of breath faster than average.
Short Staffed | Her magic is channeled through her staff, or more specifically the orb within it. Without it she cannot perform any magic at all.

Faux
(She introduces herself as “Fox” after years of people getting it wrong and just accepting it)
Species : Figment | A species that exists within the mind-space that often “work” by creating dreams for other species. Her species does not age, nor can they become sick from anything in the “real” world, however she can be injured as simply as any human.
Age : Unknown, appears to be a woman her mid thirties
Height/Weight : 5’11” (180 cm) | 402 lbs (182 kg)
Gender : Female
Reason for Entering : Accompanying Tori
Memento : The pendant on her choker
Abilities :
In Your Dreams | Seeing as Faux is indeed a dream creature, her strongest skill lies in the dream worlds. If someone is asleep she can infiltrate their dreams and change them to their liking. While invading one’s subconscious she can discover their greatest fear and exploit them, she has a hard time learning anything else from the subconscious. This however does little more than frighten the target; after all it’s only a dream.

This however does little more than frighten the target; after all it’s only a dream.
- Sleep Troubles | Although Faux’s greatest power is dream manipulation, she has no way to ‘force’ people to sleep. She essentially has to wait for someone to sleep naturally
Casting Shadows | If she wants to she can recede into a shadow. It won’t be visibly noticeable whether she’s in a shadow or not (she will be denoted in any visual media as a set of eyes for reader ease).
- She heals slightly faster in the shadows. A shallow cut could heal with a full night's "sleep" (at least 8hr rest)
- She can NOT manipulate the world around her while in shadow. All she can do is see things around her and speak.
- Because her species doesn’t sleep, this is essentially the replacement and how she can regain energy
Beastly | She has one other form, which makes her what Tori would describe as ‘a camel goat ram lion thing’ that stands at 5’ (152.4cm) tall at the shoulders. It is actually this form, her true form, that gives her her unusually high weight as a human. She is rarely in this form unless she’s trying to scare someone, or she is too tired to maintain a human form. She still has opposable thumbs in this form and can hold items in her ‘front paws’.
Not Everything as it Seems | She can essentially paint an illusion over anything. She can make anything seem like it is or isn’t there, or go as far as to completely change one’s surroundings. It doesn’t change real world objects though (see below in Skin Deep). However she can change a real world object's appearance in the illusion so that it would still seem solid. For example she could make a desk appear to be a large boulder, so in that fashion the person she’s fooling would still avoid the rock and not run into it. It’s possible to break this ‘spell’ by simply coming to the conclusion that it’s fake and forcing yourself to see the real world, however the illusions are generally good enough to fool even the strongest of minds for at least a short while. She can trick the mind so well that some people even believe they can feel wind, water, and temperature changes in the illusions. It’s not uncommon for people to think Faux has teleported them somewhere else entirely before they discover the farce.
Weaknesses :
Magical Bond | As per The University's new regulations on figments: all figments must be bound with their real world foster volunteer to limit their abilities. Faux’s powers are now bound to Tori. The further from Tori she is, the weaker her magic. In a similar fashion Faux’s human appearance begins to degrade at extreme distances from Tori until she is forced to be only in her beastly form (anything past .5 mi / .8 km she is full figment). The connection has a physical connection point through the pendant on her choker, but is effective even if said choker is removed. The pendant just allows Tori a sort of tethering point to enforce stronger restrictions if needed. It essentially functions as a spectral “leash” to the same effect as Inuyasha’s “sit boy” command.
Physical Strength | She’s strong enough to open a jar on her own. Aside from her weight though she’s pretty easy to physically overpower. That is to say: if you grab her wrists and restrain her, she’s not strong enough to brute force her freedom from you, but you may have a hard time knocking her to the ground based entirely on her weight.
- Skin Deep | Her real world illusions are merely that, an illusion. Depending on how gullible someone is they can seem more real than they are, but she merely changes the appearance of the physical realm. So for example: in a dusty library room full of shelves of books Faux can make it look like a wide open field. However, should the person now seeing a field decide to go running across it, they’ll run into an ‘invisible’ bookshelf. In other words, real life obstacles still exist in Faux’s illusion world. This is the easiest way to break the illusion, as it helps people realize that they aren’t in ‘reality’.
- Breaking the Magic | While her illusions are very convincing, they often lack people. This is because she’s not very good at mimicking voices, or even really speaking outside of her own voice. Because her voice is naturally very muted and nearly monotone, she struggles to put accurate emotions into illusions even when trying. If she includes a person they may sound unusually dull, or just seem off when displaying emotions, as if they don’t really understand them. This does not pertain to dreamscapes, as she can draw from a person’s memory.
Magical Bond | As per The University's new regulations on figments: all figments must be bound with their real world foster volunteer to limit their abilities. Faux’s powers are now bound to Tori. The further from Tori she is, the weaker her magic. That is to say: if you grab her wrists and restrain her, she’s not strong enough to brute force her freedom from you, but you may have a hard time knocking her to the ground based entirely on her weight.
Squinting Heavily | Faux can survive the sun. But the brighter an environment is the smaller her field of vision becomes. She starts missing more details as everything sort of fades to white at the edges. Direct flashes of light in her eyes will daze her more than average.
- She can NOT recede into her own shadow. Since the shadow source would then vanish, it's physically not possible for her to do.
- Because this is also essentially how her species “sleeps” (regardless of whether she’s talking through it or not) she must return at least every 8 hours for a small rest (1 hour) or she begins experiencing exhaustion comparable to humans pulling an all nighter.
More Human than She Looks | Despite not aging, she can come to harm just as easily as any other living being when manifested in the real realm.
Personality :
