Nothing but a blinding shade that overtook all.
Despite the stabbing pain that wracked cer form, ce felt ce had died without it in cer sights. A beacon of reminder.
Nothing but the sounds of numerous tassely wings flapping alongside frantic footsteps were there to console cer, as the sounds swelled into a calamity of mania before crashing into muffled sizzles.
Reality formed… something soft and overabundantly green… a minty marsh perhaps? No, that'd be too familiar, too mocking from where they’d gotten angry at cer in the first place.
Regardless, ce dug cer claws into anything that could be held, needing cer lungs to fill with real air as ce manifested fully, trembling as cer sight came to, heaving frantically.
Cer eyes darted as ambient sound had finally developed, the space quietly calm before the bust-a-bout arched cerself into a manic prayer.
“MY DEITY I DID NOT MEAN TO I AM BUT MORTAL I AM BUT FROM THE AWFUL AWFUL LIVING PLANE AS OTHERS, I AM WEAK, I WILL MAKE IT UP TO YOU I-I… I…”
Mary ceased cer whimpering and unclasped cer paws as ce truly took in the night sky and… odd surroundings. Ce pouted with confusion as ce brought cerself to cer knees instead, resting cer paws there as ce shifted cer head around.
“Where… am I?”
The trees were wrong… the foliage beneath cer thighs felt too itchy… was this place corrupted? Had they thrown cer into something immediately to repent?
After a few moments of surveying, ce grunted as ce brought cer weight up, staggering to cer paws as ce shuffled, tidying cerself nervously. Ce took a hesitant wander around the clearing, observing what should have been chocolate and wafer trees closer. Ce ran a paw to them with fervor, before realizing it scratched cer easily with that friction as ce gave a small ‘eyouch!’
Cer approach changed to a softer grab as ce peeled a hard piece off of it, bringing it to cer mouth cautiously, and-
“BLEGHHH!!! WHAT THE UNDERWORLD!”
Ce spat it out, its ‘flavor’ not even registering or attempting to melt upon cer ribbon tongue, the texture alone atrocious as ce shook it off.
“This is… definitely a c-corrupted, filthy area… how horrible… eugh… I guess that means I’ve got something to deal with, huh? Well, anything to make it up… my deity.”
Ce sighed, not realizing ce’d just eaten a fucking tree. Ce’d shamble a little bit, before something darted from the brush before cer. Positioning cerself with cer vihuela in front of cer, ce gritted cer teeth with shocked fear… before something unexpected had emerged from the brush instead. It looked like a far smaller, and scragglier caballo, fitted with two long, sharp horns as it panted, out of breath.
Mary had immediately assumed this was the threat, and despite that, ce stepped back and tried to find footing with cer instrument.
“Hola there… caballo? You want… to stay still while I get rid of those?”
Ce asked tentatively, prompting a gaze from the horned creature. It was a gaze of confused surprise as it watched this red beast draw closer, more confidently with a furrow of cer brow.
“Come on, I’ll make it easy!~ and you’ll feel-”
All had taken a startled jump as a screech broke through the air, the frantic flapping of wings and toppling of brush cracking through the air as the horned beast practically flew above Mary to take scrambling residence beneath a log as it peeked with wild eyes.
Mary looked back to it with snarled annoyance, before ce brought cer attention back in front of cer to witness a massive, winged-feral-like creature charging right to cer. With a scrambled click, ce shrieked, tripping over cer own prosthetics before heaving cerself into an accompanying brush as it practically crashed into the hiding log.
Ce stood up cautiously as ce watched it look for cer, before it turned its attention on the horned caballo beneath. Two… corrupts going at each other? It was peculiar that neither of them looked remotely bust-a-bout-ish… but that didn’t matter as Mary began trailing the bushes in an instinctively fearful escape.
Ce had just met the entrance to a clearing before ce had heard a shrill cry from the horned creature, the winged feral continuing to ram at the log before it had backed off and reduced into jumping and clawing at the thing with its feet. Mary looked between the free clearing, back to the scene, back to the clearing… and groaned as ce cringed with a fisted paw shaking frustratedly.
It would have been a true annoyance, if ce hadn’t cleared cer head with the thought that this must have been the corrupt the Sun Deity desired cer to deal with… yes! That’s right! The one silver lining in this pot of burnt caramel. Ce’d forgotten so easily… kenkek… ce gritted cer teeth with fear regardless as ce readied cer vihuela with a sarcastic remark.
‘How… excellent… keeek… well, at least it’s something easy…'
With that, ce tuned through the screeches; beginning an instrumental ce hadn’t sung in forever despite the notes being native to cer paws.
Clearing cer throat, ce smiled beneath the pale moon, and waltzed forth.

WRITTEN PORTION [2/2]: AN EGO BOOSTED, AN OFFER ACCEPTED
"
The clearing was aflutter with reverberating coos and hoots from the once hostile beast; small flowers had continued to blossom upon it, so much so that it soon unfurled into a new collection of masses.
Its bundled form of vines no longer tense nor in desire to defend themselves as they clung to the environment passively, resting akin to drunk snakes. The bust-a-bout gave a smirk as ce whirled cer vihuela around cer form egotistically with an exaggerated grin as a flabbergasted gazelle watched on.
“Everyone loves a good joke now, don’t they? Ay, that worked out just fine krekek… I’ve told you m-my deity, I keep my wits, didn’t you see?~”
Ce bowed ceremoniously with a swipe of cer sombrero, a leg clicking as ce placed it behind cer other with unexpected grace. It was a gesture purely unreturned by the grove; it didn’t seem incredibly impressed… just silently grateful instead in the way it swayed.
Regardless, it was unmistakably quiet to the two. Mary had remained still in cer gesture, before peeking an eye open expectantly. Cer mouth frowned crookedly for a moment as a ‘hm’ escaped cer throat, fixing cer posture back to normal impatiently as ce tipped cer hat.
“That is… weird… must I do more?”
Ce looked up expectantly with a raised brow, only to have a frill twitch as ce heard something trot up to cer briskly. Grass crunched as the bust-a-bout’s gaze found itself looking down behind cer to realize it was just the weird horned horse ce’d distracted the corrupted away from. Cer troubled frown was messily thrown into a half-lidded smile as ce’d thrown a blanket over cer woes.
“Oye caballo curioso!~ What’s up, needed to get a better look at the most talented musician in all of Pantano Azul? Knk, wouldn’t blame you, you know? If I could look at myself, I wouldn’t stop either.”
Ce laughed cer usual chortle, paws upon cer hips boastfully as the gazelle tilted her head with a narrow of her eyes; This… definitely was a character, weren’t they? Mary quickly switched into a kneel as ce gingerly pulled out the flower plucked from the confrontation, holding it out to the ‘horse’.
“Well, here’s a gift in exchange for my leave- just so you won’t feel so sad about not getting an autograph or anything.”
The gazelle gasped quickly, her eyes widening as she finally found her words after such a display.
“Wait! You can’t go!"
Mary nonchalantly shrugged, twirling the flower in cer webbed fingers ignorantly. Fans had always been like this, it made sense.
“Tsk tsk, I’m afraid I’ve got to caballo, see I think I got turned-”
Cer eyes widened as cer smile was permanently opened in a shocked realization. Cer fans were never… talking caballos.
“I… you… spoke.”
Ce squeaked out the last word pathetically as the ‘horse’ gave a nod, but a clasp of new fingers as it seemed she shifted in an instant, now resting upon weird knees as she looked to the shocked bust-a-bout with a far flatter face.
“I-I’m sorry! I shouldn’t have blurted out like that, ahem, it’s just- uhm…”
Mary placed a paw over cer mouth as ce nestled it under cer fluffy chin. Cer gaze was latched onto the caballo as ce tried to piece together anything to make sense- before it released into a shaky breathe-in and an acknowledging look to the side as ce muttered with a wide mouth.
“… O-Oh my goodness I really screwed up.”
Ce remained comedically starstruck as the caballo continued, standing fully as she almost met Mary’s head. This difference prompted a raised eyebrow from the bust-a-bout; No one had ever really been shorter than cer, afterall. Ce hesitantly listened with a readjusting posture as the shapeshifting caballo cleared its throat.
“Hey! Hi! I-I’m Blanca. I’m the caretaker of this grove… you must have heard of it, yes?”
Mary’s upper lip curled for a moment in confusion, before fixing cerself abruptly.
“Ay er… ermmm… si! Of course I knew- I know quite alot indeed. Si, si. I just ahhh… was not expecting all of that, eh? That’s a lot to throw on someone you know! You can’t just throw corrupts a combres like myself without a warning… if that was you!”
Ce leaned over Blanca, cer height terrifying as ce scolded seriously, voice deepening with a growl toward the end. Blanca looked truly remorseful yet slightly terrified, about to apologize before Mary gave a hushed smile alongside a giggle and a cross of cer arms as ce relaxed back. Ce couldn’t resist freaking this odd beast out!
“Kenkkenk! I am joking! Buuut despite it…. I guess I can oversee it. You are lucky I am talented and such a sweet, caring bust-a-bout!”
Blanca swallowed the lump in her throat audibly as she merely huffed with relief. Despite it, she seemed to just be glad this person was lingering as she clasped her hands with a nod. Mary would nod alongside, not before wondering why this task hadn’t been rewarded… why it had a character attached to it, even.
“I-I do apologize! Sincerely… That’s actually what I’d like to ask you about… You see, that beast had come out of my grove. It was a collective of plants before it bound together into such a form! I’m afraid something has been corrupting my plants into hostile creatures such as that one. I do not know what it is at all yet… but seeing what you’d just done there, I would really appreciate a sort of… big favor from you.”
“A big favor? Knek! Wasn’t saving you enough? Listen I understand you’d want an encore but my paws are tired. I’ve got… bigger things to figure out right now instead of singing to walking trees. Good luck with that, though.”
Mary soon attempted to turn away with a goodbye, before the smaller being hopped right in front of cer in a follow.
“WAIT WAIT PLEASE! I uhm would love to let you go on your way and everything… wherever you’d be going but, please I beg of you to consider my offer, just really quick- I-I would prefer if you stayed but… I’m not gonna keep you stuck here.”
Mary nodded cer head with a half-lidded gaze, allowing her to go on with a tilt.
“That… thing you just did, that performance! I didn’t understand… we’ve had many defeat my foliage but, there weren’t too many who had actually quelled them! Restored them to their actual state.”
Mary gave a smirking guffaw at this acknowledgement; the ego boost finally keeping cer attention.
“Ay yes yes… I am naturally gifted in this sort of thing, alongside my vihuela… it’s specifically blessed for things like that, you see?”
Mary smiled, placing cer paws to cer hips as ce gave a smug lean, chuckling almost deviously at the fact this was finally acknowledged as something so special.
“This really isn’t a walk in the park for you?”
Blanca quickly shook her head, prompting Mary to continue as ce held cer paw to cer mouth in a snide giggle.
“Well… you know what? I think I might be interested in this afterall! Especially since no one’s ever really given me any type of gratitude for my work… how lovely of you~… erm?”
“Blanca… uhm… miss Blanca? If you’re looking for a title, erm-”
“Mees… Blanca.”
Mary removed cer hat and kneeled with a respectful bow. Blanca gave a smile and an attempted bow in response. The bust-a-bout continued with a prideful ‘tsk-tsk-tsk’ as ce finally ‘pieced it together’; Ce knew Sun Deity wasn’t that mad at cer! Basic corrupt curing task to prove cer worth? No problem, no problem at all! Ay, this finally made sense!
“Well, you’ve won me over, congratulations Mees Blanca!~ It sounds easy enough… so where are the rest of them?”
Blanca gave a troubled furrow of her brow as she looked down, ear flicking.
“Oh! Well you see it’s not really a once and done gauntlet. See I’ve also set up a sort of competition since I need an incredible amount of help… It draws people in due to the prize I offer… So, I assume you’d be fine competing?”
Mary laughed, though a twinge of nervousness coated it. Ce wasn’t expecting to have to encounter… more people. Regardless, the prospect of a prize being thrown in for something so minute sounded enticing!
“Sure, sure! I’d hardly call it competition in that case… although, what prize do you offer? I assume a great sum of coughers, hm?”
Blanca raised her eyebrow curiously, before Mary chimed adamantly.
“Dinero- money!”
Blanca’s eyes widened as she was fast to shake her head.
“Well n-no, not exactly that… but your time in my grove will be covered for in any other way! We’ve got food, lodging, medical care- b-but! The grand prize for whoever assists me the most will be the resurrection bloom… a flower I’ve been growing of which has the capabilities to bring back the dead.”
“... Blasphemy.”
Mary grew still as ce interrupted, staring down the jolted being with a painted smile.
“You speak fantasy, don’t you?”
“I do not! Does that… pose any interest to you?”
Mary thought for just a moment. It sounded… preposterous… ce almost feared it as ce was lost in thought, but assumed it to just be a humorous piece of dialogue set by cer deity as ce gave a deep chuckle.
“Kenk… Yes… why not? We’re all owed a little fairy tale aren’t we?~”
“I guess you could put it that way… but, thank you so, so much. Any hand on deck is help and you must know I am far too grateful for your generosity.”
The ‘caballo’ being gave a slightly enthusiastic pump of her arm, as if unsure if it looked right or not. Mary couldn’t entirely tell cerself as ce looked down with a wheskish grin. How curiouso this creation was…
“Now that it’s a deal, I’ve gotta get you all set for it- do you have a memento of some kind? Perhaps from your deceased or-... oh, right, you didn’t know the exact prize until just a second ago…”
Mary was quick to give a nonchalant shrug, attempting to seem cool until cer grin faltered with the realization that ce indeed didn’t have anything to hand over… well, anything ce wanted to give if ce could avoid it.
“Kenk… erm… do you need it?”
“Well yes! I need to surround it with a tracking spell… just so we can find you if you get lost- and we understand it’s something that won’t be off of your persons at any time. Would you want to use your instrument maybe? That hat of yours?"
Mary took in a deep breath, looking about nervously, before returning cer composure with a forced smile as ce took off cer hat. Ce held it, staring blankly at who ce’d believed to be Sun Deity’s pawn… but no. Nothing seemed to happen as Blanca had merely looked into the thing.
“So… the hat?”
Blanca inquired, before Mary dug into its indent, pulling out cer folded photo. Ce stared to it for a moment, rotating it and feeling its burnt edge before returning cer gaze to Mees Blanca.
“You… won’t burn this?”
“... N-No! Why would I?”
Mary gave a hum, before holding it out hesitantly. Blanca took it just as gently, about to open it up curiously.
“... Is this who you’d want to be resurrect? Oh… I’m sorry for your loss if that’s-”
A voice chimed in with a fake politeness- the edge of it coated in a harsh command.
“Do not open it. Please.”
Mary gave a gritted grin with actual predatory eyes as Blanca complied with fidgeting apologies.
“Gracias.”
The bust-a-bout nodded nervously, before Blanca twirled her finger around the paper gracefully; light following it as Mary stared, paws outstretched to grab it just in case, before it had been imbued with light that faded quickly. Blanca gave it back just as it seemed the bust-a-bout would have fainted then and there with wide eyes.
“H-Here you go! Sorry about that, I shouldn’t snoop around others’ belongings in that fashion.”
“Don’t uh…”
Mary held the folded photo before cer in bewilderment, before ce tucked it back into cer hat and placed it on cer head with a relieved smile. The expression of which turned into a caddy grin directed to the other being.
“Don’t worry about it!~”
Blanca nodded with her own relieved sigh as she chuckled at the sight, though still left her hands in a clasp as she noted not to touch their memento again.
“Well, I’ll lead you to it! Erm… Ahah, what is your name actually?”
Blanca beckoned the bust-a-bout forward as Mary was easily responsive, the clicking of cer prosthetics following as ce slunk next to Mees Blanca.
“Well… what do you think my name is?”
The bust-a-bout asked coyly, lifting the overall mood in cer usual jesting… mostly for cerself. Blanca gave a straight mouthed squint as she looked quizzically.
“Ehhh… Rosa? You know, because you’re pink?”
Mary gave a hearty, loud snort-chortle as they’d crossed into grass mixed with stone pavement.
“Que chistoso!~ So you should be ‘White’ then huh?”
“Eh… I guess so?”
The smaller being gave a nervous laugh, Mary returning it once more with a louder one as ce trotted forward with a paw over cer chest, lowering cer volume in a mere second as ce announced properly;
“I am Mary Corazón!~ Yes Yes, that Mary Corazón. Now I’d forgive you for not recognizing me from all of the posters, ay? I can’t say I’ve performed here afterall.”
Ce gave a proud half lidded grin alongside a shimmy as ce spoke, Blanca merely gazing with an amused smile and raise of her eyebrows as they’d stepped through the grove’s entrance; Grand buildings of stone towered over, some perfectly level height with various flora able to be seen within. It truly was overgrown and unruly in a pleasant sort of way as Blanca responded.
“Huh… I’m afraid I haven’t heard of you? Though that could also just be me, none of us really step outside of the endgrove often, there’s a bit too much to take care of.”
She’d nod, and gesture her arm toward the plaza as they fully entered; It was barren, blanketed with fog the bust-a-bout wouldn’t notice… as ce couldn’t help but be stopped in cer tracks at the acknowledgement that ce wasn’t known.
“But! It’s very nice to meet you, Mary Corazón… you’re welcome to wander about, or go ahead and take a claim to a suite? It is night-time but I believe you’d be able to scrounge one up! Me and the other grove tenders will be around if you need anything, we’ve gotta keep looking on the outskirts til midnight for any new competitors. Take care and, again, thank you so much…”
Mary couldn’t even muster up a pathetic little wave in cer daze as Blanca did it instead, not before waiting for a response from the seemingly contemplating red creature. Regardless, she awkwardly walked off after she noted a small smile form upon the contestant’s face.
A smile indeed formed, a devious one as Mary’s eyes widened with a chuckle, looking to one of cer paws as the other held at cer head.
“You… You really don’t know who I am?”
The evening filled with a dry, echoey snort.
“Que lindo!~”
With that, ce’d given a showoffy spin; The Sun Deity was so kind! A menial task alongside a weird place with no authorities? Oh, ce had this, ce had this right in the bag.
Ce was going to prove to them that ce was still of loyal use yet! Yes, the forgiveness would be one filled with praises… maybe… maybe ce’d even earn to keep such a ‘useless piece of paper’? Ce’d figure out an exchange for it… regardless, their deity would be so happy, they’d just have to let cer. Mary just had to not think about it.
Despite such good realization, ce still upturned cer lip at the general absence of… anything as ce intook cer ghastly surroundings.
“Deity… well, if no one knows who I am, then I’m gonna have to make it known with how dead it is here. Knk, that’s never been hard though~”
Ce walked briskly to a large painted map presented above a bench, strung about an odd tree. Ce wiped at it with an exaggerated ‘blegh’ as dust caked upon cer thumb pad, looking for anything that seemed interesting.
“Ah… there we go…”
A theater… ce didn’t know what roman meant, but, what stood out had been both that, and the fact it was next to a giant blotch upon the map; a place unknown, and most likely not desiring to be explored by newcomers like cerself.
If the winds were right, ce could play a tune unbothered of which no one would find the source! It sounded perfect… and playfully annoying.
Ce made cer way upon a starched path, surrounded by dark plains and overgrowth.
Ce could swear ce could see shapes… but reasoned it to mere vines- no one would have been out this late. Soon, ce came upon the large structure with a grateful grin alongside a tilt of cer head.
Entering was vaguely familiar, though no auditorium ce’d ever been in was quite like it… especially given the overgrowth on non-candy fungi. It seemed they were cer own personal audience as ce trailed the way toward the stage itself.
Meeting the stairs, ce trailed up, cautious to avoid further fungi and hanging vines.
“Pardoname, senora marshroom…”
Ce jested in a step, though felt almost insulted that they’d let a place of such lovely expression be torn like this… but ce had to bear with it. Despite cer confident attitude, it mildly dissipated on the first creaking step on the rotted stage. Ce hadn’t been somewhere like this in a long, long time. And that had been when… Ce grumbled, holding cer head from the events of the day previous.
It wasn’t the time to be plagued with that right now! This was for cer to calm cerself down and bring some needed life to this place. Ce took a step forward, making a seat right on the edge of the stage; bundles of the fungi surrounded its edges like shrubbery.
Nights truly were cer favorite, combined with the soft light of this rising moon, it made cer feel quite welcome despite being in a place that had no sign of cer beloved deity, bringing cer vihuela to cer chest in comfort instead, tuning it. They’d show up sometime soon, of course.
Ce’d soon found cer footing into a soft, but jaunty melody, letting numerous strings vibrate enthusiastically as small balls of yellow light radiated from its form; Ce hadn’t any words to add to it, not just yet, but the melody was enough to put cer at ease alongside the slowly glowing ‘audience’ of fungi, already influenced with cer calmness as the place already felt far more welcoming.
Ce knew it must have felt truly honored to become so lively, especially thanks to Mary Corazón’s own talents occupying it, of course!~
